When we’re on the hunt for a new role, it’s tempting to scroll through job listings and narrow our focus to positions where we tick every single box. I’ve seen recruiters and other contributors recently post “what not to do.” But the truth is, if we limit ourselves to only applying for jobs where we perfectly fit the criteria, we miss out on opportunities for growth—both personally and professionally.
On the other side, sometimes we find ourselves hesitating to apply for roles where we’re “overqualified.” But the magic happens when we recognize that we’re not just applying for a job title—we’re applying to be part of a company’s culture, its vision, and its goals. The bigger picture is where we can make a real difference.
It’s crucial to remember that a resume is simply a snapshot of our experiences, not a full picture of what we bring to the table. Our work ethic, ambition, and personal drive often go beyond what can be listed on a piece of paper. In reality, we are all evolving, driven by our ambitions and the goals we set for ourselves. When we bring this mentality into an organization, we not only grow but also contribute to the growth of the company.
If we only apply for roles we’ve already done, we risk stagnation. By stretching ourselves and applying for jobs that challenge us—whether we don’t meet all the qualifications or are overqualified—we create space for growth. We show companies not just what we’ve done, but what we’re capable of doing in the future.
I remember my first job out of college. I knew the industry I wanted to be in, the role I wanted, and where I was going to live. Without a perfect match in experience, I walked into an office I had my heart set on, handed over my resume, and showcased my ambition. The next day, I became the first woman hired in their 22 years of operation. While we can’t physically walk through doors as easily these days, we can still figuratively show up—ready and willing to add value.
So, my advice? Know your worth, take a chance, and apply for the job you want. We are more than our resumes. We are contributors to the bigger picture, and by believing in ourselves, we can evolve alongside the organizations we join.
Stand by your ambition. Your future self will thank you.
