Vaporware: The AI Mirage We Keep Falling For

If you guessed “Vaporware” was the newest villain in the malware/spyware family, you’re not alone. I definitely did a double-take the first time I heard it. But no, it’s not here to steal your data—it’s here to steal your hope (dramatic, but kinda true).

Vaporware is what happens when a shiny new AI product or feature gets hyped to the moon, only to… well, never actually launch. Or it launches so far behind schedule that by the time it shows up, we’ve already moved on to five other “game-changers.” It’s the digital equivalent of being ghosted by a product.

And in today’s wild west of AI tools and tech startups, Vaporware is having a serious moment.

As a data analyst, hype isn’t really my thing. I like facts, tests, and a fair bit of trial-and-error before I’m ready to roll out the red carpet. Sure, I can write some solid marketing fluff when I need to—but not before I’ve personally tried to break whatever it is we’re hyping. (That’s just good science.)

Are We Doing Too Much?
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Also yes.

Don’t get me wrong, I love tech. I’m a beta tester for a reason. New toys? Yes please. But the constant cycle of updates, patches, and half-baked features that need “just one more sprint” before they’re ready? It’s exhausting. Sometimes, it’s better to step back and ask: What if we just started clean? Like, give me a beautifully simple, no-fuss tool that does the job well—no fluff, no filler, no popup demanding my biometric data. (Looking at you, Chevy… your front-end camera is doing the most.)

Back to Basics, Please.
There’s something refreshing about a clean, crisp product that just… works. No 47-click setup. No waiting for a feature that was promised in last year’s press release. Just solid, tangible value.

So, if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the AI hype rollercoaster—or if you’ve accidentally gotten your hopes up for a tool that never made it out of beta (dare we say, all these new job application platforms)—you’re not alone.

Let’s keep talking about the real stuff: what works, what doesn’t, and why sometimes less is more when it comes to tech. Instead of reinventing the wheel, work with those already proven to be effective. Collaboration saves time.
